Reno 2004
Diary of Linda and my trip to Reno, March 2004
3/17/04 Arrived about 5:00 p.m. at the Lodi, CA KOA. Was very nice except for train track noise. Ate at a barbecue restaurant. Linda had an excellent tri-tip steak sandwich, of which I ate half. Went to bed about 8:30 p.m. as I was extremely tired.
3/18/04 Got up at 7:00 a.m. and took Meghan for a walk along a farm
country irrigation canal. We
were on the road for Reno by 8:00 a.m. It was a very pleasant sunny morning that was abnormally
warm. Drove through
Sacramento and then stopped at the Donner Summit rest stop where I took
Meghan for a rump in the deep snow. She loved running and digging in the cold white stuff. Arrived at Reno KOA Hilton RV Park about noon. We got a great site right next to a rapids on the Truckee
River. Had dinner at the
Sparks Nugget Oyster Bar. Linda
had a fresh Crab Louie and I had a fresh oyster pan roast. Both where yummy.
3/19/04 Took Meghan for 3 mile walk along
the river walk in the morning. Played
bridge at the Reno Nationals in the Seniors Stratified Open Pairs
starting at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.. We played lousy and did not place in either session. I was aghast about the entry fee of $54 / pair for the event.
3/20/04 Got up at 7:30 a.m. and took Meghan for 5 mile walk along the
river. It made both of us
quite tired. We had
breakfast at Western Village Casino and then went shopping for food to
use in the 5thwheel. Watched
several NCAA basketball games.
3/21/04 Played the Senior Swiss Teams with Marvin and Alice French. We came in 7thoverall winning 3.5 master points. Linda cooked
bean soup earlier and we had it for lunch in the 5thwheel
with Marvin and Alice between sessions.
3/22/04 Took Meghan for 5 mile walk along the Truckee River from 7:30
a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Meghan
loves chasing the honker Canadian Geese, although if one turns on her
she would back off in a hurry rather than being pecked by the honker. Had a great economy $2.99 steak and eggs breakfast at Ballini's Casino with Marvin, Alice, John Wright, and John Kissinger. The conversation was very pleasant as we talked about various
bridge hands first, then about our past and future travels. Rested awhile in the 5thwheel and went down town Reno
to gamble and to see the kayak water park on the Truckee River. I lost $7 and Linda lost $60 playing blackjack. The kayak water park was very impressive and I wished I had
brought my inflatable raft as the weather is warm and river is high. The rapids look to be perfect for my boat at class 2 and 3.
3/23/04 Linda and I played in the National Mixed Pairs Event. It’s a two day event, if you qualify the first day which we did
with a 51% and a 56% showing in session 1 and 2. Had lunch at Chevy’s in the Hilton between sessions. I had scorching hot shrimp which was excellent and provided lots
of leftover’s for the 5thwheel refrigerator.
3/24/04 Walked Meghan about 3 miles along the river this morning. Linda can’t find her new Chase Visa card this morning, nor can she remember when she used it last. Wive's are a pain some times. Played our qualifying sessions, but did not do well at all, as I
and Linda played less than stellar. We had dinner at the Nugget Oyster Bar where Linda found her
credit card waiting for her. I
had the best Crab Louie salad I have ever tasted with loads of crab in
it. Yummy Yummy.
3/25/04 Left in the morning for home. Stopped at Mono Lake for lunch in the 5thwheel with
beautiful view of the lake, tofu mounds, and snow covered mountains in
the back ground. I did a
hike with Meghan to the lake tofu mound area and back again. We drove on to Bishop where we stayed the night in a very
nice RV Park where we met 3 interesting couples who were staying there.
3/26/04 Left about 9:00 a.m. for San Diego. Stopped at a local restaurant in Lone Pine for breakfast. There was a road and trail that goes into the Sierra Nevada
Mountains to the Palisades Glacier the most southern glacier in the
world. Must hike to it when
weather is better some day. After
driving about 3 hours we stopped at a BLM piece of land called Fossil
Falls and old river bed with black worn volcanic rock all over. It was very scenic and Meghan enjoyed the 1 mile round trip walk
to the Falls. Traffic was
heavy in San Bernardino and Riverside. Arrived home about 5:00 p.m. and unloaded the trailer.

This
is a view of the mountains near Mono lake on highway 395 on our way
home. |

Another
view of Mono Lake. I think it has a stark beauty all its own and
of course the birding is excellent on the shores of this lake, |
 |
It
was windy and in the low 50's but it was so beautiful that we decided to
park the 5th wheel close to the lake and have corn beef Swiss cheese
sandwich lunch with a million dollar view. Note the wind kicking
up spray in the far back ground. |

After
lunch I took Meggie for a 2 mile hike along the lake shore. She
tried one sip of the water but decided it was way to salty for even a
dog. |
