La Jolla Cove 2010
Roger's photo shoot at the La Jolla Cover, La Jolla, California, January 25, 2010

Our main goal today was to photograph the gray pelican on the wing.
It was a beautiful sunny day at La Jolla Cove.
A gray pelican landing on the rock right above the sea cave.

It is not easy to capture these birds on the wing. I used AI focus which constantly updates focus when shutter button is held 1/2 down. I used manual mode, high speed burst multi shooting 6 frames / second. It takes anticipation, concentration, and lots of shots to get a good one. 3/4's of the shots were trashed.

Richard Bledsoe with his Mark II Canon camera, canon 400mm F4 lense. A very knowledgeable birder, nature photographer, and photoshop user. I enjoyed his good advice on shooting the birds.
My best shot during flight. It takes some practice to get these shots with a 400mm lense. Richard convinced me that manual mode using AI focus was the best settings for this endeaver.
