Photos by Roger Zellmer and Linda Willingham - Rafting the Upper Colorado River May 2003 -

My maiden voyage on my 14' Soar Inflatable canoe. This is the upper Colorado River about 12 miles up from Dotsero Hwy 70. Its also 12 miles up from the confluence of the Eagle Colorado River. A great stretch of river for a rookie.
Having some consternation about my first class 3 rapids which I can hear just around the corner.
The water was cold and moving about 8 mph. Unfortunately Linda was unable to get any shots of me shooting the rapids.
The small canyon was very beautiful. A combination of private ranches, BLM, and NFS lands.
Lining up for another rapids, The key seems to be staying at right angles to the waves even if they are lateral waves. Maneuvering the boat quickly is essential.
I really enjoyed the 1.5 hour run down this pleasant stretch of river. Sure hope I can do it again next year doing the entire 60 mile section.
