Alaska - Hubbard Glacier - July 2008
Our ship cabin boy made really cool towel sculpture everyday for us. I thought this monkey was particulary good.
I enjoyed our outside balcony as we entered Yakutat Bay toward the location of the famous Hubbard Glacier.
Linda loved this balcony for smoking.
Kathy always beats Conrad up in the morning.
The water did not have many ice bergs here.
As we approched the glacier the water was full of floating ice.
It was a bit cloudy but still great weather for Alaska.
The Hubbard Glacier is actually advancing, not receding as most glaciers are.
The water opened up as we got closer to the glacier. The captain said this was the closest of the year for him.
The captain turned the ship so both port and starboard had a view.
The glacier was breaking loose into the water called calfing.
It cracked like a gun.
This was a big one.
It created a wake that would have been a problem for a small ocean kayak.
The sun came out here for a couple of minutes.
A nice falls. People on the ship did screaming to entice more calfing.
The top of this glacier was quite jagged.
We stayed near the glacier about 2 hours so we decided to switch locations to the bow of the ship.
The interior of the lounges were decorated lavishly.
They even had a pool hall with some sort of self leveling legs on the tables.
An exercise class in progress.
We stayed at the glacier about 2 hours and were now leaving. Apparently only one large ship at a time has room to enter the bay.
Seeing this glacier close from a large ship has been one of my fantasies come true, thanks to Conrad and Kathy's generosity and persistance to entice us to join them.
