Peshtigo River August 2004
Diary of Linda, Charlene, Mike, Justin, Cheyenne, Myself, and Meggie's camping rafting trips down the Peshtigo Menominee Rivers in northern Wisconsin - August of 2004
8/17/04 Left at 9:00 a.m. for Crivitz in northern Wisconsin. We stopped in Waupun to purchase propane at Farm Fleet for
the 5th wheel. They
sell propane in Wisconsin by the pound and we used about 11 gallons and
paid $34 which I believe to be total rip off. I must research how many pounds are in a gallon. We drove about 235 miles to Kosir’s Rapid Rafting Lodge,
Cabins, and Campground on the Peshtigo River. The area is beautiful with mixed forested private land just south
of the National Forests in northern Wisconsin. We got a nice large, flat, grass, partially wooded site in the
campground. The site had a
southern exposure so I was able to set up the satellite TV. We watched the Olympics all evening.
8/18/04 Got up at 9:00 a.m. and I made sourdough blueberry pancakes. Spent the morning doing
my diary and watching the Olympics. Mike and Char arrived in the afternoon. We took a walk with Meghan and we made dinner in the 5th wheel.
8/19/04 Mike and I rafted about 5 miles of the class 2 and 3 Peshtigo
River this afternoon. We
used Kosir’s Rapid Raft Lodge rental a Hyside 9’ inflatable kayak
and shuttle service. The first mile was lots of work dodging rocks and paddling
off of the rocks. I flipped
my boat on the first scary 5’ drop which was pulsating at the bottom
and it had a lateral curling wave which I over compensated for. I negotiated the rest of the drops OK. Mike had no problems other then dodging rocks and getting off
rocks. It was allot of work
but we enjoyed the raft trip allot. The river itself was fast moving and very beautiful with lots of
rocks. Charlene made a
delicious pork roast for dinner in our 5th wheel that night.
8/20/04 Mike, Char, Linda, Meghan, and I spent the day visiting water
falls in Marionette County. This
is beautiful country well worth visiting. We brought left over pork along to make picnic lunch sandwiches. Justin and Cheyenne arrived about 9:00 p.m. and we set up lights
to aid them put up their tent.
;
8/21/04 Made sourdough pancakes for Justin and Cheyenne's breakfast. Rafted Menominee River with Linda, Charlene, Mike, Justin and
Cheyenne. The
first part of the river was class 2 & 3. We had a 10 man raft
with no guide, so we had to navigate ourselves which was a challenge as
non of us were experienced at guiding a raft this size.; When we
reached the big class 4 water we grouped up with a professional guide
and 4 other people.; We walked up a hill to scout the run and Linda
almost fainted from fright and decided to walk this portion.; This
steep raging water run over Volkswagen rock was really exciting.; I
can close to falling out in the rear of the boat as we went over the big
drop backwards.; Has we grouped up this left empty boats upstream,
so we all walked back upstream and got to take another exciting
run.; The cost was $50 each, a real bargain for the excitement we
had.; We used Kosir's Rapid Raft who did a great job.
Returned back to camp and barbequed filet mignon steaks for
dinner.; Had a nice campfire before bed at 11:00 p.m.
8/22/04 Drove west across Wisconsin and stayed in Minocqua.
8/23/04 Continued west through NFS land.We had lunch at a campground on Day Lake near the town of Clam
Lake that was pristine and beautiful. We took Maggie for a walk on the excellent nature trail along the
lake. We continued on to Trego Wisconsin for our next boating adventure
on the Namekagon. We stayed at the Trego Town Park RV park
